CLUB PRESIDENT'S REPORT - by Arthur Owens

The season has "kicked-off" the way we like - with plenty of.skiable snow! The Committees have been doing the usual planning for our snow season.

Club Race Week at Thredbo will be another great week with the Lodge being full of racers - social racers that is. It is also pleasing to see KAC joining in with us again this year for our race carnival.

There are still a number of competitors vying for final selection for the Thredbo Interclub Race. The Junior Interclub at Thredbo is gaining momentum year by year. Kim Easdale will be heading the SASC Team competing at Thredbo on Monday 12 July. The Juniors Committee is a "well oiled machine" organising the Junior events for the Club - check out their Report. Bob and Sally Sims would be more than pleased to hear from anyone who would like to join in with the very popular events held by our Cross Country and Bush Walking group. Chas Keys, the writer of our Club history, is scheduled to have a few chapters completed by the end of June, We will be looking forwarded to reading these initial paragraphs. Please remember that if you have any old SASC letters, photos or anything that may be considered history, please send it to Joan Gardner , Marie Westgarth or Jan Owens. All members are more man welcome at the Club's meetings held at North Sydney Leagues Club. Your participation in Club matters is essential to the running of our great Club.

Have a wonderful snow season and stay safe.

Don Alston, long time member of the Club, passed away on Sunday 25 May 2010 . Don joined the Club in 1976, and being the extremely enthusiastic person that he was, served as Club Captain and Vice President from 1984-6, dedicated President from 1986-90, Lodge director from 1987-90 and highly esteemed Chairman of Directors from 1990 to 2005.

Don's dedication and innovative service to the Club and Lodge was greatly appreciated. His finance background and acute business intellect were used well as the Co-Op flourished and experienced a prosperous period under his stewardship. He implemented major reforms to the organisation's business plans and was instrumental in the major refurbishment of Christiania Lodge.

Don will be sadly missed and our deepest sympathy and best wishes go to Barbara and the extended "Alston" clan.

LODGE REPORT - by Joe Di Falco

Lodge Self Cater Winter Periods

While Kahane and Christiania Lodges have self cater periods at the end of the winter season, Charlotte Pass Lodge is fully catered up to and including breakfast on Sunday 4 October. Please refer to tariff sheet for dates - see www.sasc-aus.com/SASC_Tariff_2010.pdf

The 2009 Season of Operation proved to be exceptionally challenging due to global financial difficuities and early snow deterioration by the end of August, similar to conditions experienced in 2008.

Tariff Rates for accommodation were not increased last year but regrettabiy income for accommodation is down by approximately 3.9% and interest received from our cash reserves is down 52% due to refurbishment expenditure at Kahane Lodge which resulted. a trading loss of $193.113.70 for the year. Amortisation, Building and Plant depreciation entries of $157,590 should be kept in perspective. Running costs have been closely monitored by the Board and continue to be contained within reasonable limits. No unexpected or extraordinary expenditure was experienced during the year.

A major review of accommodation tariffs was carried out (as previously reported) and a self catering period at the end of the season has been introduced. Any comments regarding this would be appreciated. Members should be aware, that for the next 3 years, the Lodge Co-op was faced with the liability of premium repayments for the Lease Renewals a; Thredbo ana Perisher plus the purchase of additional beds rights for Kahane Lodge. In view of the above, your support and patronage of our facilities in the snowfields is strongly sought after and encouraged.

In conjunction with the Ski Club, we have undertaken the task of writing the history of our three lodges. It is almost 50 years since the planning and construction of Charlotte Pass Lodge commenced. Your collaboration in recording past events and any photos would be greatly appreciated. Finally, I would like to express my thanks to our Lodge Managers, Directors, Booking Officers, Treasurers, Secretary and Administration Officer for their unselfish effort, work ethic and excellent cooperation. Make use of our facilities in the snowfield. Have a great winter!!

PERISHER HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Perisher Historical Society Profile

A couple of years ago Pam Woodman and Judy Thomson of Ku-ring-gai Alpine Lodge collaborated on the idea of forming a Perisher Historical Society after earlier discussions about the history of skiing and the colourful characters that have graced the Perisher Range. An article in the 2005 autumn edition of Resort Round-up about an NPWS oral history project stimulated Pam to contact NPWS and Perisher Blue to identify a potential partnership in the historical society and for opportunities to contribute towards the group's establishment and subsequent exhibition. This article now provides an update as to the formation of the Perisher Historical Society and opportunities for people to contribute memorabilia.

The Perisher Historical Society is now an incorporated body after registering with the Department of Fair Trading. The name Perisher Historical Society was selected to be inclusive of what is often called the Perisher Range Resorts. The term Perisher Range and Perisher Range Resorts, whilst an accurate reflection of all localities in this area (eg. Perisher Valley , Smiggin Holes, Guthega and Blue Cow), has incurred a use that tends to be associated with a range of development plans and planning instruments. It was deemed important by the group that no ambiguity was construed in the name as well as imbue an effective identity of what the society was about - hence the compromise in the name.

In due course, consideration will also be given to the group for affiliation with the Royal Australian Historical Society that will help give access to reasonable insurance rates should public liability or voluntary worker insurance be required (amongst other benefits). Furthermore, a call for membership will also be made once administration is established. (Extracted from Resort Roundup 25 DEC 2007).

Perisher Historical Society website has an application form and Newsletters.
