NEWS FROM THE JUNIOR COMMITTEE - Daniel Kavo

The Juniors program for the 2010 season was confirmed at our May meeting. The Bus trip continues to attract large numbers but, because of space limitations, we are not able to take all the children that apply. We have given preference to the older children applying prior to our May meeting. We understand missing out does cause disappointment and are open to suggestions to cater for those who miss out.

Sue Pike will be a new face on the Bus trip. She also has the onerous task of being our Juniors' treasurer and I'm sure she will be an asset on the Bus trip.

Tim Easdale was our only sponsored junior this year and had some mixed results with some DNF's as well as some good positioning in Slalom and Giant slalom. He has also been enjoying some great results in Skier X. Tirn is now ranked 1st in Australia for Juniors and 9th in the world in Juniors. Our Australian racers have been excelling in this exciting new sport as can be seen by our SASC Ski Cross racers and Olympians, Jenny Owens and Scott Kneller.

The Junior Committee will give some support to 2 young racers this year. Mitchell Sloan will be racing in the NSW Cross Country Ski Team and Tia Schwarko will be joining Thredbo Ski Racing Club. Both have been dry training over summer to improve their fitness and we encourage them in their pursuits.

We will have club Tshirts for sale in the lodges this winter as well as sleeveless fleecy vests and other small items. Please ask you lodge manager or Juniors committee member.

Travelplan has joined with Park City Chamber of Commerce to provide our major Guessing Competition prize this year. Please read flier in this newsletter and check out benefits paid to SASC Juniors. A book of tickets was enclosed with the July newsletter and we appreciate your support. Tickets are still only $2.50 each or a book of 10 tickets for $20.00. Please purchase your tickets and return butts to Marie Westgarth.

Park City Utah – Great place to Ski

Park City is the easiest ski area to access in North America. It is located in Utah's Rocky Mountains Range, just 35 minutes from Salt Lake City International Airport.  Our town and it's three expansive ski resorts - Deer Valley Resort, The Canyons Resort and Park City Mountain Resort, are all within 5 to 10 minutes of each other and linked by a free public transit system.  When combined, our resorts offer over 9,000 acres of skiable terrain, 369 trails, 55 lifts and up to 9 annual metres of Utah's lovely dry powder, known as the “Greatest Snow on Earth”.

Our family-friendly resorts feature plenty of terrain for every type of skier, from beginner to extreme and the native pine and aspen forests provide some of the best off-piste skiing and riding in North America. We also offer a variety of back country and cross country adventures.  If you're looking for some extra fun for the kids, then you can try our mini snowmobile & tubing hill, located at Gorgoza Park. When it comes to apres, you will love to explore our historic town, with over 100 bars and restaurants or alternatively, unwind in one of our many luxurious spas.

Park City was host to the 2002 Winter Olympics and is the official training site of the USA Ski and Snowboard Teams.  It is home to many international events including the World Superpipe Championships and the World Cup Freestyle Championships. It is also the corporate headquarters of Rossignol, the Sundance Institute & the worlds only Ski-In Distillery-The High West Distillery!

Entry is $7.50 with prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed girls and boys in each age group.

Our next meeting is in October at Carlingford and I encourage attendance to select our improved and most outstanding Junior skiers, elect the 2011 committee and fold the guessing competition tickets!! If you would like to nominate a Junior for our awards please forward race results and/or training program details to our Juniors secretary, David L.asky.

Please contact Daniel Kavo or David Lasky if you have any questions about the Juniors program.

Bus Trip Preparation morning was held on 6 June. Full report in the October newsletter.

Junior Bus Trip This year our Bus trippers will receive special touring packages organised by David Lasky. Charlotte Pass is an excellent location for our group and I am sure the village staff and our adult helpers will do everything possible to ensure the kids have a great time. The helpers, elected at our May meeting, are Alastair Sloan, Daniel Kavo, Sue Pike, Gate Jack and Catherine Stanyer.

Thredbo Junior Interclub Ski Race Monday 12 July, 2010. Please ring Kirn Easdale as soon as possible if you would like to enter. Competitors will have race entry and daily lift ticket paid by Juniors with lodge gathering and presentation at the Kellar later in the afternoon. We came 4th last year and we need to enter a very consistent team across all age groups, especially the older Juniors. The Junior Race team will enter and I encourage any of our club children keen on racing to contact Kim. Anyone staying at Kahane or Jindabyne is welcome to join in. The Juniors plan to have a bus to take racers from Perisher and return. A race briefing and bib collection for the competitors will be held at Christiania Lodge at 8.15am.

Older Juniors Weekend Last year we trialled a weekend in September for children who were no longer eligible for the Junior Bus weekend to get together with friends they had made on past trips. If you or your children are interested, please phone Rod Peile or David Lasky.

Junior Presentation Our Juniors and parents are welcome to attend the Club Christmas Party and Presentation dinner on Saturday, 6 November at Waterview Restaurant at Bi-Centennial Park in Homebush, The venue has separate area where the children can be entertained before the presentation of the Junior Race Team trophies, Most Outstanding Junior Racer and Most Improved Junior Skier. Junior Guessing competition tickets will be available up until the draw, I am sure the draw will be a highlight of the evening, especially if someone attending wins a prize!

Nestled high in the Wasatch Mountains, the historic mining town of Park City is unlike any other ski town in the USA. Home to three world class ski resorts - The Canyons, Deer Valley and Park City Mountain - the town of Park City offers four season recreation as well as sophisticated dining and nightlife, all within a 40 minute drive from Salt Lake City International airport. Park City is also the annual headquarters for the Sundance Film Festival.

In the winter, you'll find world class skiing and snowboarding. You can also enjoy the thrill of speeding down the same bobsled run used in the 2002 Winter Olympics in an authentic competition bobsled. Other activities include nordic skiing on groomed trails, guided snowshoe tours, snowmobile tours and hot-air balloon rides.
